March 22nd, 1980 — Danny Thompson of Maple Ridge is knocked on the ropes by Andy Minsker of Oregon during a golden gloves bout at Exhibition Gardens in Vancouver. Minsker won the bout and the title in the senior class. Another set of pictures long in my archives without names until Newspaper.com digitized every issue of the Vancouver Province and made them available online. More boxing pictures HERE.
June 3rd, 2016 — Muhammad Ali died today aged 74. In 1972, during the time he was officially banned from boxing after refusing to be drafted into the army during the Viet Nam war, he put on exhibition fights around the US and Canada including far out of the way Edmonton. It was different era. There was only a small entourage around him and because the press were by then friendly, for an hour or so the day before the fight me and a reporter hung out with Ali in his hotel room with Angelo Dundee, the referee, and a few others connected with the fight. Pictures from the fight can be seen in the “Boxing, the forgotten sport” collection by clicking on the picture above. The pictures of him in his hotel room unfortunately were lost long ago in the files of the Edmonton Journal.

circa 1969 — Muhammad Ali boxing in an exhibition match in Edmonton, Alberta circa 1969. Ali was stripped of his license to box professionally in 1967 because he refused to be drafted into the US army. During the four years it took to regain his license he participated in exhibitions with sparing partners in Canada and the US. Muhammad Ali is 70 years old today.
1980’s — Gordon Racette from Port Alberni was one of the local boxers who came out of the “So you wanna fight” competitions and for a few years fought professionally against some big names in the sport. Not sure how the name of the fighter he’s knocking through the ropes in this fight. It’s either Robert Echoles or Robert Eccles.

1970’s — Vancouver, BC — Boxing was another sport that has a certain fascination for me especially when the boxers are young and just starting out. Newspapers today totally ignore the amateur side of the sport but at one time every tournament was covered just in case an up and coming prospect would appear. A very young Dale Walters waits in the dressing room for his event to be called with his father Len, right and I think his older brother, center. Dale eventually won an Olympic bronze medal.
