Polar Bear Swim

Polar bear swim at English Bay Beach January 1st, 2015 — For most, the polar bear swim in Vancouver’s English Bay is a few brief moments of torturous cold followed by a quick sprint back across the sand to warm clothes while wearing a facial expression only a newspaper photographer can love. These are not good pictures for newspaper photographers; not even ex newspaper photographers. Polar bear swim at English Bay Beach

Polar bear swim Vancouver 1980s
January 1st, 1977 — On this day every year in Vancouver thousands of people gather at English Bay beach for a swim. They all run as fast as they can into the freezing water and many swim out to boats in the bay but some only get wet to their knees, turn around and run back to the relative warmth of their friends on the beach.
