Belly Flop Contest

1979 Belly Flop Championship

Circa 1979 — The World Belly Flop and Cannonball Diving Championship was the creation of legendary Vancouver publicist Tom Butler and grew from a stunt to promote the Bayshore Inn hotel in Vancouver to becoming an event all it’s own attracting three or four thousand spectators, entrants from Fiji and Japan plus celebrity judges such as Billy Carter (brother of then US President Jimmy Carter) and coverage from NBC television. This picture is from the Coach House Inn in North Vancouver. It was unusual to jump from a balloon, possibly not even within the rules, as most jumped from a spring diving board. I have no idea who the flopper is or if he won.
