Is concrete green?

October 13th, 2021 — It’s curious that the two towers in the background of this picture at 1684 and 1668 Alberni Street are being considered for demolition and redevelopment — I assume because they are at the end of their life — while the two houses in the foreground aren’t. What is the life of a concrete tower; these two can’t be fifty years old? Does a city trying to be the greenest in the world consider demolishing buildings like these “green”?

Dunbar produce

June 7th, 2021 — Dunbar Produce on Dunbar Street has been closed for about three years; the block the building sits on waiting for development. It doesn’t now, and never did, look like much but it had connections to local farms that no big box store had and their produce was always fresh off the farm, not fresh off the boat. It’s not sure why they closed but high taxes and high rents entered into it for sure. When the new building is eventually built I doubt there will be a produce store like it on the ground floor.

Houses lifted

January 27th, 2021 — I’m all for saving heritage houses but these three houses at 8th Avenue and Birch supposedly being “saved” by raising them on stilts and building a massive condo development underneath seems to be beyond the limits of common sense.
