Saltspring Island was once the refuge of artists and misfits; a cheap place to live and tolerant of eccentricity. Tourism changed that. Tourists arrived to spend a day or a week of vacation and became entranced with island life. They dropped by the local real estate office on their way home, bought land and paid city prices, built expensive houses, and commuted daily to high paying jobs in Victoria by ferry or in Vancouver by seaplane.
All this meant development, more roads, stores, and sub divisions. Trees were cut down and the land was bulldozed to make room for them. The island changed. The pictures below were taken to document the changes.
