November 6th, 1974 — Woodward’s Department Store was “the” department store in Vancouver partly because it was locally owned but also because they had these great annual sales. I worked in Woodward’s shoe department while going to high school so the British shoe sale was the one I knew well. It went on for a week with shoes at half price. The other big one was the beef sale which lasted for, I think, a day and drew people to the downtown store from all over the city who left with arms loaded with steaks and hamburger from Woodward’s own cattle ranch in the Caribou. It was a chaotic event.
